I generally stick to five varieties, repeated. Then I hold the colour or the height.
A Block is seen in the round, so you can walk around it. Orient it how you want to experience it.

Putting a row of plants against a fence hides many sins. Designing a garden you can walk into, sit in and experience from every direction takes more thought.
I spent five years growing and observing more than 15,000 perennials to figure out how to make it work. The result is an approach to creating immersive perennial gardens that makes the design manageable and creates bursts of magic.
All perennials are not the same.
I use a deliberately limited Plant Palette, curated from the hundreds of varieties I’ve grown. If there’s one thing I’ve learned the hard way, variety matters. Two plants with the same common name can behave very differently and change the whole character of the planting.
